A Meditation on Buddha Shakyamuni
Some Western Buddhists may downplay the role of prayer and have decided that since as Buddhists we can't logically locate anything akin to an external creator, there's no need to pray for assistance. However, enlightened masters remind us that are countless Buddhas always surrounding us, lovingly guiding us, spontaneously blessing us and never separate from us. You may observe in worldly affairs that if you seek out help, you tend to get much more assistance than if you never ask for any. In contemplating this, we can begin to see that there are potentially great benefits in using prayer to ask for a little help from those who have accumulated more merit and wisdom than us.
Prayer is not just mouthing some arrangement of words, although that's one technique to begin the practice. It is a personal experience that can deepen and become more powerful with repeated practice. Prayer practice is an excellent methodology for opening oneself to blessings, the blessed energy of transcendent wisdom that radiates from all Buddhas and enlightened masters. By visualizing Buddha Shakyamuni, his powerfully positive influences can better assist us in unlocking our own inner nature in order to attain the ultimate result of the path, Vast Awakening.
In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it is written that Buddha Shakyamuni taught:
“By seeing, hearing, and making offerings
to the Victorious Buddha,
an immeasurable amount of merit develops.
Until all disturbing emotions
and the sufferings of Samsara are overcome,
this accumulated merit will never be lost.”
Meditation and visualization with Buddha Shakyamuni as the object of refuge and respect is a type of prayer practice that Buddha taught and which has been perpetuated by many Buddhist lineages. This type of prayer is a powerful tool for generating merit, the amazing positive energy that remains in one's present moment thinking after one has engaged in beneficial thinking.
Hazlitt was Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche's attendant and tour manager during Khen Rinpoche's 2007 North American Dharma Teaching Tour. By attending the many evening teachings during the tour, Hazlitt had the unique opportunity to receive a beautiful teaching on a Buddha Shakyamuni visualization from Khen Rinpoche, hearing it over 30 times first-hand.
Hazlitt will teach this prayerful meditative visualization practice and relate it to the passages in The Buddha Path that are translated from Mipham Rinpoche's "A Practice of Buddha Shakyamuni."
Teachings, practices and a dharma dialog will be included in this evening event. You can ask questions specifically relating to the visualization or questions about any topic.

Saturday Daylong Urban Retreat

Bodhisattva Retreat with Bodhicitta and Refuge Vows
Pre-registration is required for this retreat.
Come spend a peaceful day in Port Townsend's North Beach, studying, contemplating and meditating upon the enlightened intention of bodhicitta. The meaning behind this altruistic motivation is so profound and vast that we don't yet have a word or phrase in English that can adequately convey the meaning, so for now we need to keep the Sanskrit term bodhicitta.
The retreat will be led by Hazlitt, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher authorized and and granted the title, Upasaka Bodhisattva Pema Bhadra Dorje, Dharma Teacher of The Buddha Path, by his root teacher Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche.
In four sessions of about 90 minutes each, this daylong non-residential retreat will explore the significance and meanings of both refuge and bodhicitta. We will delve into many aspects of path of the bodhisattva. Bodhisattva translates as hero of enlightened wisdom, whoever makes the bodhicitta promise.
After lunch, vows will be offered to those who feel ready to make commitments, but even if you are not ready to make a refuge promise or bodhicitta promise, you can still participate in all sessions and gain a deeper insight into bodhicitta, the keystone of Mahayana, the Great Vehicle of Buddhism.
This retreat requires that you attend from the very beginning and and remain with the group all day in order to remain in the retreat. However, you may leave at any time. If you need to leave and wish to rejoin the retreat, you'll need special permission from the teacher.
Water, tea and some snacks will be provided. Please bring food and drink to meet your dietary needs for yourself for lunch as well as any snacks you need. You are welcome to offer food or non-alcoholic beverages to the group as well. There will be a 90 minute lunch break which will include a short walk down the beach, weather permitting. Bring walking shoes for the hike.
We have plenty of chairs and cushions at the center, but you can bring your own floor cushion or chair pad if you'd like to create more comfortable conditions for you during the retreat. Breaks every hour or so will be provided to allow for stretching and tea.
